This article addresses the robust output regulation problem for a class of nonlinear switched power converters after its linearization by means of a change of the control vector variable. The methodology employs a dynamic state feedback control law and considers parametric uncertainty due to unknown values of resistive loads. Restrictions arising from the fact that the control gains exhibit fixed values are taken into account. The proposed technique is exemplified with the output voltage regulation of a Noninverting Buck-Boost converter and tested through realistic numerical simulations.

The Peiropolis paleontological site (Late Cretaceous, Maastrichtian) in Minas Gerais State, Brazil yielded an important assemblage of fossil vertebrates. The typical occurrence of South American widespread taxa in Peiropolis is important for correlation between the Brazilian Bauru Basin and Argentinean Late Cretaceous basins. The fishes, turtles, anuran, crocodilians and dinosaurs known from Peiropolis (Marilia Formation) resemble the Patagonian latest Late Cretaceous vertebrate faunas but lacks ornithischian dinosaurs.

Psychological evidence has emphasized the importance of eye gaze analysis in human computer interaction and emotion interpretation. To this end, current image analysis algorithms take into consideration eye-lid and iris motion detection using colour information and edge detectors. However, eye movement is fast and and hence difficult to use to obtain a precise and robust tracking. Instead, our method proposed to describe eyelid and iris movements as continuous variables using appearance-based tracking. This approach combines the strengths of adaptive appearance models, optimization methods and backtracking techniques. Thus, in the proposed method textures are learned on-line from near frontal images and illumination changes, occlusions and fast movements are managed. The method achieves real-time performance by combining two appearance-based trackers to a backtracking algorithm for eyelid estimation and another for iris estimation. These contributions represent a significant advance towards a reliable gaze motion description for HCI and expression analysis, where the strength of complementary methodologies are combined to avoid using high quality images, colour information, texture training, camera settings and other time-consuming processes.

A novel and very sensitive electrochemical immunosensing strategy for the detection of atrazine based on affinity biocomposite transducers is presented. Firstly, the graphite–epoxy composite transducer was bulk-modified with different universal affinity biomolecules, such as avidin and Protein A. Two strategies for the immobilization of the anti-atrazine antibodies on both biocomposite transducers were evaluated: ‘wet-affinity’ and ‘dry-assisted affinity’ immobilization. Finally, the performance of a novel anti-atrazine immunocomposite bulk-modified with anti-atrazine
antibodies was also evaluated. The better immobilization performance of the anti-atrazine antibodies was achieved by ‘dry-assisted affinity’ immobilization on Protein A (2%) graphite–epoxy biocomposite (ProtA(2%)-GEB) as a transducer. The immunological reaction for the detection of atrazine performed on the ProtA(2%)-GEB biosensors is based on a direct competitive assay using atrazine-HRP tracer as the enzymatic label. The electrochemical detection is thus achieved through a suitable substrate and a mediator for the enzyme HRP. This novel strategy was successfully evaluated using spiked orange juice samples. The detection limit for atrazine in orange juices using the competitive electrochemical immunosensing assay was found to be 6×10−3 μgL−1 (0.03 nmol L−1) thus this biosensing method accomplishes by far the LODs required for the European Community directives for potable water and food samples (0.1 μgL−1). This strategy offers great promise for rapid, simple, cost effective, and on-site biosensing of biological, food, and environmental samples.

The creep behavior of 6061Al alloy obtained by ingot metallurgy and powder metallurgy, IM and PM, respectively, has been investigated in
the context of published studies on this alloy. The behavior of the IM alloy in a given range of temperatures where the , Mg2Si, precipitates
are formed, is dominated by dislocation climb-controlled creep and aluminum self-diffusion as rate controlling process. A dependence of the
inter-particle distance, λ, with the applied stress, σ, of the form λ ≈ 1/

σ is found when the creep data are analyzed in the context of the
sub-structure invariant model. The superior creep resistance of the PM material can be explained if a threshold stress, σ0, is brought into the creep
equation. This term is the difference between the applied stresses needed to reach a given strain rate in the PM and the IM alloys, and correlates
well with a particle–dislocation interaction mechanism according to the Artz–Wilkinson model.

This paper analyzes how national institutional factors affect the adoption of the intemational environmental management standard ISO 14001, using a panel of 139 countries from 1996 to 2006. The analysis emphasizes that during the emerging phase of the standard, the potentiallack of consensus within the constituents of the national institutional environment conceming the value of a new standard could send mixed signals to firrns about the standard. The resuIts show that in the early phase of adoption, regulative and norrnative forces within the institutional environment can work against each other. Results also show that regulative or coercive forces playa relatively more important role in the early phase of adoption of the standard than in the subsequent phases of diffusion. In the later phases of diffusion of ISO 14001, norrnative forces, such as the diffusion of other management standards, as well as factors related to trade, playa more important role. Because of the similarities between environmental management standards and corporate social responsibility standards, this study can help identify sorne of the challenges for diffusion of ISO management standards in the area of social responsibility.

Background: Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a chronic, intraoral burning sensation seen mainly in middle-aged and post-menopausal females, without identifiable oral lesions or abnormal laboratory findings, but often associated with psychogenic disorders such as depression. The latter can have a range of causes, including hormonal. Objective: Since there may be connections between BMS, psychogenic changes, hormonal changes and taste abnormalities , we have examined aspects of taste and thyroid function. Patients and methods: We selected 50 patients with BMS (study group) and 50 healthy subjects (control group) and analysed their ability to taste bitter, acid and spicy substances and analysed their thyroid function and Undertook thyroid echography. Results: Taste sensation was normal in all controls. However, 30 of the patients with BMS reported ageusia for bitter taste and 2 had ageusia for acid. The use of pepper sauce (Tabasco®) (spicy substance) produced a strong burning to the tongue in 28 patients of the BMS group but only in 10 controls. No control patients showed abnormality of thyroid function or echograpic abnormality. Five patients in the BMS group had biochemical evidence of hypothyroidism, 4 patients had raised levels of thyroid auto-antibodies and, of the 41 remaining BMS patients, most (34) had thyroid echographic changes cative of nodularity. Conclusions: Hypothyroidism may be responsible for a negative influence on taste and consequent increase in trigeminal sensorial sensation (tactile, thermal and painful sensation).

Background: The restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a movement disorder characterized by an imperative urge to move the legs, associated with paraesthesias, motor restlessness and worsening of symptoms at night with at least partial relief by activity. Its prevalence ranges between 2-15% of general adult population and 20-30% of uremic patients. Aim: To evaluate the frecuency and the clinical features of RLS in a sample of general adult population and in uremic patients, in Chile, correlating it with biochemical parameters. Method: 100 relatives of outpatients and 166 uremic patients undergoing chronic haemodialysis were interviewed assessing the presence and severity of RLS according to current diagnostic criteria. Biochemical parameters assessed were hematocrit, serum ferritin, phosphate, intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) levels. Results: 13% of the general population sample was affected, 15% of them were severe. Forty three cases were found among uremic patients (25.9%) (p <0.01 vs general population), 60% of them were severe and women were affected with higher frequency (p <0.05) and severity (p <0.01). Four patients presented RLS even during hemodialysis. No correlation was found with biochemical parameters. Most RLS cases had not been diagnosed previously. Conclusions: In our population RLS is common and undetected. It is especially prevalent and severe in uremic patients: we found no evidence that anaemia, iron deficiency or iPTH level play a major pathogenic role. Our findings emphasize the need of greater medical awareness of RLS because available therapy may improve the quality of life (Rev Méd Chile 2001; 129: 179-86).

Ageing reduces vigour and viability in maize inbred lines due to non-heritable degenerative changes. Besides nonheritable
genetic changes due to chromosome aberrations and damage in the DNA sequence, heritable changes
during maize conservation have been reported. Genetic variability among aged seeds of inbred lines could be used
for association studies with seed germination. The objective of this study was to identify genes related to
germination in aged seeds. The sweet corn inbred line P39 and the field corn inbred line EP44 were used as plant
material. Bulks of living and dead seeds after 20 and 22 years of storage were compared by using simple sequence
repeats (SSRs) and, when the bulks differed for a marker, the individual grains were genotyped. Differences between
dead and living seeds could be explained by residual variability, spontaneous mutation, or ageing. Variability was
larger for chromosome 7 than for other chromosomes, and for distal than for proximal markers, suggesting some
relationships between position in the genome and viability in aged seed. Polymorphic SSRs between living and dead
seeds were found in six known genes, including pathogenesis-related protein 2, superoxide dismutase 4, catalase 3,
opaque endosperm 2, and metallothionein1 that were related to germination, along with golden plant 2. In addition,
five novel candidate genes have been identified; three of them could be involved in resistance to diseases, one in
detoxification of electrophillic compounds, and another in transcription regulation. Therefore, genetic variability
among aged seeds of inbreds was useful for preliminary association analysis to identify candidate genes.
